Moving off old copper phone lines
What to check when copper phone lines are switched off.
Many countries are switching off old copper phone lines (for example the NBN rollout in Australia and the PSTN switch-off in the UK), so business phones now run over the internet.
Steps
- Check with your provider which of your services still rely on old lines, such as fax, alarms or EFTPOS.
- Choose a VoIP provider and a plan that suits your number of calls.
- Make sure your router supports voice and has SIP ALG turned off.
- Keep a mobile handy for emergencies, as VoIP phones don't work during power or internet outages.
